Perry is she is Chicago native, birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first roles on television were two appearances as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. The actress did not go on to pursue acting as a career until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were afraid of the negative impact stress might cause. Perry claims she never wanted to become an actor during high school, but she decided to begin playing as a way to make friends during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry moved into New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California where she found theater jobs. Perry starred with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. The show featured their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on the ABC drama The Family. In 2017, Perry starred in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. The actress also portrayed her older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, which is a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. She got the part by auditioning for an open role despite being a fan of this role.
